Hands On With Two Tamron Zooms For Sony E-Mount

Image
The popularity of Sony E-Mount cameras has prompted Tamron to develop a growing lineup of lenses for the system in its Di III series of lenses designed for mirrorless cameras. We field tested two Tamron zooms for Sony—the Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056) and Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD (Model A071)—and were generally impressed. Both zooms offer appealing features for Sony shooters: compact weather-sealed lens bodies, versatile zoom ranges and fast maximum apertures. Even better for photographers on a budget, these Tamron E-mount lenses are relatively affordable. The 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD sells for $1,199, and the 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD goes for $729. Sony’s own closest equivalents to these lenses sell for considerably more. How do they perform? I had a chance to test these lenses this past summer in the Catskills in upstate New York, and they were both excellent telephoto zooms and a good value. Wildlife Photography: Steps For Success

Image
Wildlife photography is one of the most difficult areas of photography one can enter. There’s a myriad of factors that have to fall into place to create a fantastic wildlife image. Take a minute to ponder all that must occur to get the shot and see if I cover them all below—think about it before you read on and make a mental list. Find The Critter This may sound rudimentary, but number one on the list is you must encounter the animal you want to photograph. There are no guarantees if you go to Glacier National Park that you’ll see moose, or if you go to Yellowstone you’ll see bison, or if you go to Rocky Mountain National Park you’ll see elk, or if you go to the California coast you’ll see sea lions, etc.  If I had a dollar for each time I drove the Lamar Valley and got skunked, I’d be rich. I’ve also driven the Hayden Valley Road in Yellowstone and the only wildlife I saw was a moth. I walked the trails of Rocky Mountain National Park and the closet I got to making images of e...

Subject-Background Harmony

Image
Harmony: A consistent, orderly or pleasing arrangement of parts. The combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce chords that have a pleasing effect. Husbands and wives need to live in harmony to stay together; politicians should live in harmony to solve problems and come to compromises; peace and harmony go together so all people everywhere around the globe can get along. As you can infer, when harmony exists, everything fits like pieces of a puzzle. Harmonic musical notes strengthen a song, harmonic colors seamlessly blend and, in regard to photography, a successful harmonic image allows the subject and background to come together as one. Bad background. Good background. Discord is the opposite of harmony. If one bangs random notes on a piano, discord is created. In social media, posts that show polar opposite opinions are filled with discord. As you can infer, discord isn’t something positive. If you’re reading this, obviously you are into photography. S...
